Barbra at the Paramount 100th anniversary

Many Paramount Pictures stars from the past gathered on the famous lot today for a once in a lifetime group photograph. The occasion was the 100th anniversary of the studio. Stars from The Godfather–like Robert DeNiro, James Caan, and Al Pacino, as well as director Francis Ford Coppola–were joined by famous types like Barbra Streisand, Shirley MacLaine, director Peter Bodganovich, Harrison Ford, Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks, Nicole Kidman, plus Martin Scorsese, Gore Verbinski, Tom Cruise, and Charlize Theron. Martin Scorsese told me last night at Paramount’s swellegant bash on the studio lot that he had Jane Fonda on one side of him, Ernest Borgnine on the other. “He’s 95 and amazing! Marty exclaimed. More stars mentioned included Eddie Murphy, and former Paramount chief Robert Evans was the only executive included in the photo. “The kid stays in the picture,” quipped our own Leah Sydney, referring to the famous Evans documentary. There were no press people there, I’m told. A full list isn’t yet available. All in all, it’s a coup for studio chief Brad Grey, who’s reshaped Paramount for the 21st century.

From today, Barbra will be joining 11 other celebrities who are competing to win a $25,000 prize for their chosen charity. In Barbra's case –the beneficiary of the contest is the Women’s Heart Center at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.
Last October, Barbra launched an online fundraising campaign to raise $5 million to benefit The Barbra Streisand Women’s Cardiovascular Research and Education Program. Fans were invited to donate online using ‘Crowdrise’ – a fun website which incorporates fundraising with social networking, crowdsourcing and contests.
Starting today - December 14th – Crowdrise is joining forces with Mozilla/Firefox – one of the biggest online search engines – to help 12 celebrities get exposure for their charities. Barbra is one of those celebrities.

Ceders Sinai Honour Barbra

LOS ANGELES, Barbra Streisand and Robert Barth were honored by the Cedars-Sinai Board of Governors at their annual Gala on Tuesday, November 8th at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Proceeds from the Gala, sponsored by Lexus, benefited the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute.
The Gala was hosted by Seth Rogen, and included a performance by Marvin Hamlisch.
The Board of Governors' current campaign benefits the Board of Governors Heart Stem Cell Center in the top-ranked Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute, led by Eduardo Marban, MD, PhD.
A major component of the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center Heart Institute, the Women's Heart Center, led by C. Noel Bairey Merz, MD, is the only one of its kind, with strengths in clinical care, education, and research. This year's Gala will benefit the Women's Heart Center as part of the current Board of Governors campaign.

"We are thrilled to have two such worthy honorees this year," says Cedars-Sinai Board of Governors Chair, John Coleman. "Barbra Streisand and Robert Barth have both contributed to the community in such significant ways, and we are thankful for their support of the Cedars-Sinai Board of Governors. "Although the orchestra tracks for Barbra’s new album “What Matters Most” took a mere three days to record, the idea of singing an entire album of Bergman songs had been something Barbra contemplated for many years.
The actual studio process was reminiscent of the “old days” (early 1960’s) when she used to record and mix an entire LP faster than it takes most engineers to get a good drum sound these days. (It’s funny how the technology designed to make things easier, often makes creative decisions twice as complicated!)
When Barbra appeared at a 2009 tribute to Alan & Marilyn hosted by The Motion Picture Academy with moderator Quincy Jones, she decided the timing was right to make it official. Sitting on stage with Alan & Marilyn, she revealed her plans in a low key but totally surprising way by simply saying, “I’m going to make my next album a tribute to you guys!” The audience applauded in delight, and for Alan and Marilyn, two people who’ve had a spectacularly successful career using words …well let’s just say they were left fairly speechless."

Barbra likes Sting - possible duet?

Barbra and husband James Brolin were surprise guests last night at the Clinton Global Initiative’s annual dinner and awards event at the Sheraton. There were other Hollywood and A list types around–designer Donna Karan, Heather Graham, Jeffrey Wright. However, Barbra and Jim packed the most punch, especially since she introduced honoree Sting before he performed an outstanding set with trumpetmeister Chris Botti on horn including “Englishman in New York,” and “Every Breath You Take.”
Barbra was so wowed by the couple, particularly Sting, that she told me later she wants the British rocker on her next album of duets. “I think our voices would go well together,” Barbra said.
She’s currently on the charts with her magnificent album of Alan and Marilyn Bergman songs, called “What Matters Most.” But she’s so impressed with Tony Bennett‘s new “Duets II” album that she wants to do one of her own. (Barbra and Tony share a famous A&R man, Jay Landers.)
When I told Streisand she could have her current version of “Windmills of Your Mind” remixed for dance clubs by deejays like Mark Ronson, she narrowed her eyes and said, “Really?” Yes, really.

How was your experience working with Barbra Streisand in your upcoming film ["My Mother's Curse"]? — ETuch, Agoura HIlls, Calif.

It was really great, actually. I have to be honest, I’m probably one of the few people who did not have a stigma in my head about Barbra Streisand. I didn’t really have many preconceived notions about her at all. And I was really open and she was really cool and easy to work with. In a lot of ways she reminded me of my actual mother. And at times, the relationship became frighteningly similar to that of me and my mother, which was weird. Overall, I think we had a very good dynamic and I think we were funny together. She was very excited to be part of a comedy team.

Barbra Streisand sets a six-decade record on the pop charts. Can anyone match her?

When Barbra Streisand’s 48th album (not including the 12 soundtracks she has sung on), What Matters Most: Barbra Sings The Lyrics Of Alan and Marilyn Bergman, debuted in 4th place on this week’s Billboard 200 chart with sales of 68,000 copies, she became the first solo artist to earn a top five debut in six different decades.
Streisand first entered the Billboard chart in 1963, with The Streisand Album, which debuted at number eight, but it wasn’t until The Second Streisand Album‘s number-two bow later that year that she first cracked the top five. Since then, the Broadway belter has notched an additional 17 top five debuts, and impressively, she’s scored 31 top ten debuts overall. (For perspective, Frank Sinatra has 40 top ten albums, the Rolling Stones have 36, and The Beatles have 30.)
Unfortunately, Streisand couldn’t surpass Game, Jay-Z and Kanye West, or Adele to add another number-one album to her collection. Since, according to chart expert Paul Grein, “Streisand is the only solo artist who has had a #1 album in each of the last five decades, from the 1960s to the 2000s,” if she can pull out another chart topper during the 2010s, she will extend her record to six decades.
But I shouldn’t be raining on her parade! The reality is that Streisand’s chart power has endured for a whopping 48 years, an incredible feat in any industry, much less the here-today-gone-tomorrow music scene.
Few artists can claim that kind of longevity, and it is to Streisand’s credit that she has remained a notable and lucrative commodity. I guess it helps having talent!

What Matters Most Debuts on Billboard Top 10!

At No. 4 on the Billboard 200 is a new arrival from Barbra Streisand, who sees her "What Matters Most" album launch with 66,000. It's the legendary diva's 31st top 10 album, which pulls her ahead of the Beatles for the third-most top 10s in history. (The fab four have 30.) Only the Rolling Stones (with 36) and Frank Sinatra (33) have more than Streisand. Here's 'What Matters Most' to Barbra Streisand

Barbra Streisand has long enjoyed the luxury of taking on only those projects that she's passionate about. But her latest album , she insists, is a particular "labor of love."

What Matters Most: Barbra Streisand Sings the Lyrics of Alan and Marilyn Bergman, out Tuesday, features 10 songs by the beloved husband-and-wife team, Streisand's longtime collaborators and friends. All were recorded by the singer for the first time — a notable detail, as Streisand, 69, had covered more than 50 of the duo's songs before.

A follow-up to 2009's acclaimed, chart-topping standards collection, Love Is the Answer, the new album was produced by the singer and includes such familiar titles as The Windmills of Your Mind, Nice 'n' Easy and That Face, as well as lesser-known tunes. The Bergmans, both in their 80s, "were at every session," Streisand says. "They've written for movies, so they write for stories and characters. I relate to them as an actress and a person."
Streisand has a new film due next year, My Mother's Curse, in which she plays Seth Rogen's mom. The part is her "first starring role in many years" — though she may have another on the horizon. Before writer/director Arthur Laurents died at 93 last May, he had discussed a new film adaptation of his classic musical Gypsy, with Streisand cast as infamous stage mama Rose. Those plans are still intact, she says.
"We just have to find our team and a writer. It's too bad, because I was looking forward to working with Arthur," who directed Streisand in her Broadway debut. "I had seen him a few months before that, and he seemed so strong and healthy."
Streisand also plans to revisit her theater roots in 2012, albeit as an observer. The first Broadway revival of Funny Girl, the 1964 musical that helped secure her stardom, is due next spring. Lauren Ambrose of Six Feet Under fame will step into Streisand's shoes, playing comedian/actress Fanny Brice.
Streisand hadn't been familiar with Ambrose, but she's curious: "I saw a clip on YouTube of her singing My Man," delivered by Streisand's Fanny in the 1968 film adaptation. "But it was uptempo, so I couldn't judge it. It doesn't matter because she doesn't sing it in the show."
Streisand is already thinking ahead musically. She's planning a duets album, considering Seal and Beyoncé among potential partners. "The timing will depend on whether I do (concert) dates, and if and when I do Gypsy," Streisand says.
"And I want a holiday," she adds. "I'm always torn between laziness and wanting to be creative. To work or not to work — it's always a pull."

My review of Barbra's upcoming, superb album - What Matters Most

WHAT MATTER’S MOST

From the moment Barbra surprised Alan and Marilyn Bergman with the announcement she was to record a tribute album to them, this collaboration has been much anticipated.
The Bergmans have been a constant in Barbra’s life since she was 18. Critically acclaimed in their own right, they have created many unforgettable images with their lyrical mastery. Indeed, theirs is one of the most successful song writing collaborations in an era of great popular music. Our lives are littered with their talent, The Sweet Gingerbread Man, Maude (TV show with Beatrice Arthur), Windmills Of Your Mind, The Summer of 42, What are Your Doing The Rest of Your Life… the list goes on. If you watch movies, TV and attend theatre, you have enjoyed the unique talents of this towering duo.

Like a circle in a spiral….

Prolific in their successful song writing, it was inevitable that Barbra and The Bergmans would join forces. They were the perfect choice to write the entire score of Yentl. Their intelligent lyrics allowed us to see into Yentl’s heart, know her mind, understand her predicament and share her journey. For this memorable score, they won an Oscar, their third Academy Award.
Over the course of her career, Barbra has recorded over 60 of their famous tunes. For this special album, she deliberately chose songs of theirs she has never performed. The result is the sublime, What Matter’s Most. It has Barbra, The Bergman’s and some of the most beautiful music ever composed. However, there is so much more to love about this album.

Barbra’s haunting A cappela that introduces Windmills of Your Mind immediately commands your attention. Her gentle voice, alone, is perfect in pitch and tone. Quietly, the music joins her vocals and Windmills are already turning in your mind. This wonderfully, surreal song, originally written for The Thomas Crown Affair, has to be performed to cue and Barbra’s interpretation is perfect. Windmills has been a long time favourite of mine and I was happy to hear Barbra had recorded it. I could listen to this one over and over…
Something New in My Life comes directly from Barbra’s heart. A new face… a new smile… a new song. I guess I must have saved a space for you in my heart… heartfelt lyrics that sail on a sweeping score, Barbra delivers this number with a wonderful depth and her voice soars towards the finale.

“There's never been a Brazilian translation of the song actually but I felt I should sing some of the lyric in Portuguese." -Barbra. So Many Stars.

Solitary Moon is a gentle, romantic inclusion. The wonderful sax underscore conjures images of hushed streets where lovers roam, and their secret evening rendezvous witnessed only by the moon.
For the next track, Barbra teamed with composer Dori Caymmi and the result is the Bossa Nova tinged track, So Many Stars. The strings sway on easy waves and Barbra even sings in Portuguese. It was a hit for Sergio Mendes & Brazil 66 when it was released in 1968.
Barbra told the New York Times she felt it was the right time to record the tune in Mendes' native tongue, "I love Bossa Nova music and the Bergman's wrote 'So Many Stars' with Sergio Mendes. There's never been a Brazilian translation of the song actually but I felt I should sing some of the lyric in Portuguese."
Barbra was briefed on singing in Portuguese by Brazilian composer Dori Caymmi, who coached her on the lyrics at the 11th hour, "The day before I recorded it I asked Dori Caymmi to come up with a translation for part of it. It was fun to do.”
The Same Hello, The Same Goodbye.. Another heartfelt number that Barbra delivers on a soothing score that carries this melancholy story of faded love. With this track we can easily admire the ability of The Bergman’s to tell a poignant tale with words and music and again Barbra’s voice conjures an apt mood and tone. She carries this one off with great aplomb!
That Face first performed by Fred Astaire, is a wonderful, jovial number and Barbra has fun with it. She acts out each nuance and it moves along on a jazzy score. Wonderful piano keys play throughout this one.
I’ll Never Say Goodbye Barbra’s voice sits neatly on the piano score and gentle strings here. This is Barbra doing what she does best. Her voice is clear, gentle and breathy as she delivers this song of promise. It’s a beautiful score and on hearing this one, you will be reminded why you love Barbra. Tingles down the spine, goose bumps… this is a triumph.
And onto What Matter’s Most. A ballad of a life shared, that ultimately is about what matters most –love. A sentiment Barbra believes and shares with us on this intimate track.

At this point in her career, Barbra has chosen to honour her talented friends with the ultimate accolade, recording an album of some their best – and she has done them proud. Much of Barbra is in this album; her heart, beliefs and experiences. Sony may bark it costs a million when she records an album – but every cent is on that disc. Barbra produced this album, and it provides a rich listening experience. It lifts the spirit, reveals the many facets of love, life, promise and sets a positive, mellow mood.
Uniquely, What Matters Most can compliment almost any occasion: a summers day, a friendly get together, a winters day before a warm fire, an eloquent dinner party. This is a meld of excellent artistry that speaks quite simply of love.

And ultimately, that is what matters most.

Barbra plays screenwriters late Mom

Barbra Streisand's new movie role is the screenwriter's tribute to his late mum.

Dan Fogelman based new film My Mother's Curse on a cross-country trip he took with his mum five years ago.

In the film, Streisand will play funnyman Seth Rogen's mother, but Fogelman reveals she's really playing his mother, who died in 2008.

He tells WENN, "It's about me locked in a car with my mother for two weeks from New Jersey to Vegas. It took a while to get Barbra but she's become my adopted mother. She's the greatest lady.

"It's really special. We literally wrapped last week in Las Vegas. I think it's gonna be really special. My mother died three years ago, which is the saddest thing ever because she was a Jewish woman from Brooklyn and Barbra Streisand was her end all, be all in life. It's a nice homage to her.

"She's playing a character, Joyce, which was my mum's name and she collects bobble head frogs like my mum did. In many ways it's based on my mum."

Beyonce's upcoming role in Clint Eastwood's A Star Is Born remake is a childhood dream come true as she became a Barbra Streisand fan while watching the 1970s version as a kid.
The Irreplaceable hitmaker will play rising Error! Hyperlink reference not valid. Esther in the fourth re-imagining of the classic, following in the footsteps of Streisand, Judy Garland, and Janet Gaynor.
Beyonce admits the role will be especially poignant as she fell in love with Streisand's voice during screenings of the Error! Hyperlink reference not valid. with her mother when she was a young girl.
She tells Reuters, "It's when I became a fan of Barbra Streisand's. And I then saw Judy Garland's version of A Star Is Born and I realised every 20 to 30 years a new star is born and a new talent represents that generation and era - so I didn't think that I would ever get the opportunity to be the star."
Despite her stellar previous success, Beyonce has hailed this movie role as "the biggest opportunity" of her life, and can't believe Eastwood chose her to front the Error! Hyperlink reference not valid..
She adds, "I met with Clint and I was so nervous and I know that it is the biggest opportunity of my life. I will work as hard as I can. Because I can't wait. And I am so happy that he trusts me and I am in good hands and I am so fortunate."

Shooting in Vegas!

Lucky tourists were treated to two big star sightings this week on the Strip.
Seth Rogen and Barbra Streisand were in town to film a movie tentatively titled “My Mother’s Curse.” The plot tells the story of an inventor played by Rogen who brings his mother (Streisand) along on a road trip as he tries to hawk his latest creation.
The set was closed to the public, but looky-loos were able to sneak a few peeks as the stars shot scenes in and around Caesars Palace. Filming started Wednesday and ended early Friday. A marathon shoot took place late Thursday into Friday morning. All local filming was done at Caesars.
The Vegas shoot marks the end of production on the movie. It has been filming in Los Angeles for the past several months.
When it is released, “My Mother’s Curse” will join a long legacy of films that use the iconic Caesars Palace as a backdrop.
