James Brolin gets into the holiday spirit early this year, starring in Christmas with Tucker, airing on the Hallmark Movie Channel November 25. It's a season Brolin loves, especially since marrying Barbra Streisand in 1998.
"Traditionally, we have a tree early on and decorate it," says Brolin, 73. "I don't know at what point it becomes a Hanukkah bush. Barbra always lights the menorah. I think it's so great. (Jewish tradition) was all new to me."
Brolin and Streisand have also developed a new family tradition.
"Sometimes we go to my brother's house, where everyone is allowed to bring only one present. It's sort of like a lottery. If you open something, you can trade it. Someone will say, 'Oh, I can use that.' Nobody knows who it's from except the person who actually brought it."
Harking back to her L.A. childhood, Brolin recalls, "As a kid, my family was famous for shopping on Christmas Eve because the prices were at least half. Now I start in September. When I was 16 or 17, I wrapped at Bullock's (the iconic Los Angeles department store chain, long closed)."
"I can still wrap a present fast," Brolin says, "especially when I wait till the last minute."
